California Coast Closed to Comercial and Sport Fishing for Salmon

The California Fish and Game Commision voted unanimously to ban recreational fishing for salmon this year. The ban on salmon fishing includes all of the California coast extending 3 miles from shore in state waters. This vote is a move to protect and hopefully restore dwindling numbers of chinook salmon (also called king salmon) on the west coast. Last fall surveys found nearly record low numbers of chinook salmon making the journey to spawn in the Sacramento River and tributaries.
California's vote follows a decision last week by federal regulators to close most of Oregon coast and all of the California coast to commercial and sport fishing for salmon. Another meeting has been scheduled by the California Fish and Game Commision for May 9 to consider whether salmon fishing will be permitted in the states rivers this year.

Lobster Season Closes in Florida

Spiny Lobster season has closed in Florida for recreational and commercial harvest. The season closed on April 1st. The regular season for spiny lobster reopens on August 6th. Florida will also have their annual two day special sport season for recreational spiny lobster harvesting on July 30th and 31st.

Florida schedules workshops to discuss commercial mullet fishing

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has scheduled a series of public workshops to discuss commercial mullet fishing in Florida. Topics to be discussed include the possibility of modifying the July through January weekend closures for the commercial harvest of mullet. FWC encourages all interested people to participate . All meetings will be held from 6 to 8 pm see below for times and locations.

Snook season reopens on Florida's Atlantic coast.

Snook season reopenend Feb. 1, 2008 in Florida, but only on the Atlantic coast and inland waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) advises that Florida’s Gulf of Mexico, Everglades National Park and Monroe County coastal and inland waters remain closed to the harvesting of snook. The bag limit for this season is one snook between 28-32 inches total length per day.
